There has been some concern of a potential link between grain-free dog food and development of serious heart problems (dilated cardiomyopathy or DCM). The problem is currently being studied but results may take some time.  Until then, if your dog has been on a grain-free diet (including home-cooked) for an extended period of time, consider speaking with your veterinarian about additional testing.  Here at Huffard Animal Hospital we offer Taurine testing and proBNP testing and, if appropriate, referral to a cardiologist.  If your dog has been on a grain-free diet and you do not wish to pursue testing, a diet change may be recommended. Our veterinarians would be happy to discuss different diet options with you.
